Politician banned for drink driving

A member of the Welsh Assembly who was caught driving when she was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit has been handed a 20-month ban.

South Wales West AM Bethan Jenkins was pulled over by police in Cardiff at 1.30am on 14 October after attending a friend's 40th birthday party and her blood test showed 194 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood when the legal limit is 80.

She issued a statement apologising for her actions but was suspended by her party, Plaid Cymru. The 30-year-old opted to drive back to her parents' house rather than stay at her friend's and Prosecutor Ian Dawes said her driving was clearly affected by alcohol.

"In the early hours of October 14 police noticed the defendant's vehicle was being driven erratically and straying between lanes one and two," he said.

"They later noticed the defendant was unsteady on her feet and her speech was slurred."

The case was heard at Cardiff Magistrates' Court. Officers also said that she was wearing pyjama bottoms and a hooded top when they stopped her.
