Hundreds of people were arrested in the Avon and Somerset Police area during December for driving while drunk, the force has reported.
Officers say they recorded 218 motorists committing the offence between December 1 and January 1, after stopping around 12,000 vehicles and testing 1,771 drivers.
A possible six months in prison awaits anyone convicted of drink or drug driving. People can also be banned from the roads for a year and may subsequently find it more difficult to securecar insurance.
Another 13 people were found to be driving while under the influence of drugs.
Chief inspector John Holt said: "Our new year message is that drink and drug driving is unacceptable and we are determined to catch people who put themselves and others in danger."
The total number caught in the area is up on last year's figure of 150.
