Hundreds of parking tickets handed out at a seaside resort were issued illegally, red-faced council chiefs have admitted.
Thousands of pounds could have to be refunded to drivers in Aberystwyth as a result of the error, Ceredigion County Council said.
The council had set up a town centre traffic restraint area in a drive to rid the resort's roads of illegal parking, but it emerged last month that its "experimental traffic order" covering the streets had expired in November 2006 and never been renewed.
This means that the estimated 2,800 £30 fixed penalty fines issued by the police and council traffic wardens over two years were invalid. And until a new order comes into force in January, drivers can park without fear of receiving a ticket.
Drivers who were fined over the period for what would have been illegal parking are now being urged to come forward to claim a refund, provided they can back up the claim.
