Pair in charity drive across Europe

Two men are preparing to drive 4,000 miles across Europe in a 20-year-old Volvo they call "a sauna on wheels".

The dress code for the friends from Sevenoaks, Kent, will be Turkish bath towels as they hope to make it across 12 countries in 14 days.

Tom Sharrad, 23, and Chris Wilkinson, 24, have made the G-reg Volvo 240, which has 187,000 miles on it, look like an authentic sauna made of Scandinavian pine.

The two, who say they are "two local scoundrels with a passion for the absurd and a charitable nature" hope to raise £5,000 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. The trust provides research and support for people living with brain tumours, along with their families and friends.

Mr Wilkinson's mother was diagnosed with a benign dermoid cyst seven years ago, but has recovered fully after seven hours of major surgery.

When he was 18 months, Mr Sharrad himself suffered a brain tumour, but also recovered.

He said: "The idea of going to Sweden came about because we wanted to take the car back to its spiritual home.

"I bought the car for £100 about two-and-a-half years ago but we have had a guy from a Volvo garage look at it and give us a load of spare parts."
