North/South divide in car servicing

Motorists in the south of England make more complaints about garage servicing than those in the North, self-regulatory automotive industry body Motor Codes has revealed.

Motor Codes said 29% of dissatisfaction claims to a special motor industry garage advice line last year were from drivers in the south east of England. Only 12% were from the North West and a mere 2% from the North East.

Calls to Motor Codes can result in intervention, but only 7% of calls got to that stage. The ones that did are used in this study.

The top complaint was problems with cars' engine control units.

Here is a breakdown of complaints by UK regions:

Northern Ireland 1%

North-east England 2%

Wales 3%

Yorkshire 5%

South-west England 9%

Scotland 10%

North-west England 12%

Midlands 14%

East of England 15%

South-east England 29%
