Ford's first hybrid-electric vehicle to be both sold and made in Europe has gone into production - and should be on sale in Britain from next month.
Its eco-friendly Mondeo Hybrid boasts a taxman-appeasing 99g/km carbon dioxide discharge rating, Ford claims.
The US manufacturing giant said the car can also achieve 100.9mpg in urban areas. Its petrol-driven 2.0-litre engine combines with a lithium-ion battery and electric motor to hit a 67.3mpg combined cycle.
Drivers will enjoy both lower emissions and improved efficiency, according to Ford's Roelant de Waard, speaking at the new Mondeo's launch.
He said the new model will give Ford customers even more options to optimise running expenses. Its green stable includes its Focus Electric and fuel-economic EcoBoost and Econetic diesel models.
The four-door saloon is going on sale starting at £24,995. This is the same price as the Ford Mondeo's 2.0-litre diesel Titanium five-door stablemate.
The Mondeo has established itself as a UK family favourite since being introduced in 1993 - with over 1.4 million sales.
The new eco-friendly Hybrid is being built in the Spanish city of Valencia.
