Motorists warned on drink driving

Drivers in the home counties are being encouraged to stick to safe drinking levels during the warm weather with an 'Enjoy Summer' information campaign from a local Alcohol Awareness Group.

The drink responsibly message will be delivered throughout the season to mark the most festive British summer in decades, with the Olympics in London, Queen's Jubilee and Euro 2012.

Chief Inspector Jane Aspin, from Beds and Herts Road Policing Unit, said: "This really is going to be a memorable summer - and we want people to remember it for all the right reasons.

"We want people to have a good time and celebrate but to make sure those good times don't turn bad."

Last year's campaign was delivered during the month of June, when nearly 80 motorists (14% of drivers stopped by police) were found to be drink driving. In June 2010, some 125 people were arrested by police during the campaign.

While the reduction was welcomed by authorities, drivers are often reminded that drink driving can affect theircar insurance , driving status and potentially their safety.

Ms Aspin added: "Drink driving can have disastrous consequences on a person's life - just that one unit over the excess alcohol limit could cause you to lose your driving licence and potentially your job and land you with a criminal record."
