A woman is to appear in court after allegedly leaving her children locked in a sweltering car for nearly an hour while she went shopping.
It is thought the three children, aged between two and eight, were left in the car in Carlisle for 45 minutes while their mother went to a nearby store.
She was arrested and charged with neglect by police after she returned to the car.
Members of the public alerted police to the situation after the children sounded the horn of the car, which was parked in Chapel Street.
Police removed the children from the car, inside which the temperature is alleged to have been 40 degrees.
A police spokeswoman said the children did not need hospital treatment.
The woman will appear at Carlisle Magistrates' Court on July 11.
