More travel chaos after heavy snow

Travellers have been warned of more treacherous conditions, as Arctic temperatures continued to cause misery onÊroads, trains and at airports.

Heavy showers of snow continued to produce more icy roads and pavements across the country, with forecasters saying that conditions on side roads are a "nightmare".

Thousands of schools also remain shut after temperatures fell to as low as minus 17C.

Train and air passengers are also likely to face more delays, with glacial conditions expected to continue for up to a week.

Steve Ellison, from MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There's no end in sight to the cold weather at the moment. It is going to be like this for a good few days yet."

At minus 17C, Benson in Oxfordshire was one of the UK's coldest areas, while parts of Manchester saw temperatures going down minus 15C, Glasgow experienced minus 9C and it was minus 3C in central London.
