Merson handed 14-month driving ban

Former Arsenal footballer Paul Merson has been fined £1,500 after admitting drink driving.

The ex-England player was banned from driving for 14 months after a court heard how he fell asleep at the wheel while over the legal limit.

Leamington Spa Magistrates' Court was told that Merson crashed his Mercedes into a lorry on the M40.

Merson was driving back to his home in Sutton Coldfield after a charity event when the incident happened in the early hours of October 12.

The football pundit suffered a head injury in the collision. The court heard that he failed a breathalyser test at the scene and was found to have 124mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

The 43-year-old was also ordered to pay £105 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
