Heralding a new era in online retailing, Mazda has become one of the first firms to offer a discount through a commercial application on a popular social networking site.
Users of Facebook in the UK will be entitled to discounts and offers from local vendors if they use Facebook Deals, part of Facebook Places.
The Japanese carmaker has offered users of the application a 20% discount on all Mazda MX-5s. It has also launched a competition that offers customers a chance to win a Mazda MX-5 Miyako special edition.
To get the offer, customers have to "check in" using Facebook Places via their mobile phones at one of the five Mazda dealerships across the UK between January 31 and March 7, 2011.
They can find the Mazda offer through Facebook Deals and present their deal voucher to the salesperson.
The same rules apply for the competition, which will last for five months.
"Social media has always been about communicating to as wide a range of people as you want, but until now has not given any commercial benefits to consumers," commented Claire Andrews, marketing director, Mazda UK.
"Facebook Deals recognises the consumer's appetite for a deal and brings a real financial benefit to social media use. Just by being one of Facebook's 26 million UK users you are suddenly entitled to some fantastic offers and 20 percent off Mazda's iconic sports car, a deal you cannot get anywhere else."
