Man pops the question in police car

Pc Nicola Rickards acted as a witness of a different kind on Saturday - after a man proposed to his girlfriend from the back seat of her police car.

The Avon and Somerset Police officer helped a couple and their dogs, who escaped injury after crashing a car on the A39 near Shapwick.

But, unknown to Pc Rickards, Caine Hutchings was en-route to a beauty spot to propose to Emily Dukeson, 27 - and he decided to pop the question in the marked police car.

Mr Hutchings, 30, produced a ring in the back seat of Pc Rickards' police vehicle while she was taking the couple to a pub in nearby Ashcott.

Miss Dukeson sat stunned at the life-changing question but was able to answer "yes" when prompted by an excited Pc Rickards, who is getting married next year herself.

Pc Rickards insisted, however, that Mr Hutchings, from Radstock, repeat the question on bended knee at the Pipers Inn pub, in order to "do it properly".
