Motorists were advised to plan their journeys ahead as a busy M1 junction shut for 36 hours.
The Highways Agency confirmed that the M1 was closed to traffic northbound between junctions 19 and 20 and southbound between junctions 19 and 18, while the southbound link between the M6 and M1 was also set to close.
The closure allowed demolition crews to bring down an old viaduct that passes over the M1 that had reached the end of its working life.
The disruption took place over the weekend with work starting at midnight on Friday and continuing until noon on Sunday. The M1, one of Britain's busiest motorways, was set to undergo major upgrade works and the Highways Agency has said that the safest way to complete the demolition was to close the road to traffic.
Motorists were advised to check routes and diversions prior to setting out as well as checking their car insurance and breakdown cover, especially if they planned to undertake long journeys.
