M1 closed after lorry accident

Police have closed part of the M1 in Northamptonshire after a lorry overturned between junctions 16 and 15a.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said the M1 was closed southbound between the two junctions, while the northbound carriageway was also closed briefly as an air ambulance landed near the scene of the accident.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle and emergency services are currently trying to free him from the lorry, the spokesman said.

The police spokesman added: "While that takes place, traffic is being taken off the carriageway at junction 16 and travelling either along the A45 into Northampton, around the ring road and back on to the M1 at junction 15a, or to the A5 heading south.

"As a result, these roads are extremely busy and motorists are being advised to either use alternative routes or to leave longer for their journey."
