Jaguar to sponsor sailing team

Jaguar has signed a sponsorship deal with the British sailing team aiming to win the prestigious America's Cup.

Team Origin, which includes three-time Olympic champion Ben Ainslie and Beijing Games gold medallists Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson, will have the iconic car brand's backing as they prepare for the challenge.

The sailors are due to begin an intensive 3-4 year training campaign before they launch their bid for the oldest trophy in international sport and the greatest honour in sailing.

They head off to Cowes next week for the 1851 Cup race with Ainslie as Team Origin's skipper and helmsman, Percy in the tactician role and Simpson as the strategist.

Sir Keith Mills, the team principal of Team Origin, said the campaign is not likely to affect the sporting stars' defence of the Olympic title in London.

He said: "Now we are working on the assumption that they will be doing both and they are training for both.

"Ben will be working for us in Cowes with 12 other crew members. He leaves straight away for Weymouth in the Sail for Gold Olympic regatta.

"They are training for both competitions because we do not feel there will be a clash. If there is a clash the sailors will have to make their own sporting choices but we are working in the belief that there will not be a clash."
