The 50-year-old Jaguar E-type has been named by Autocar magazine as the best car it has ever road-tested.

The legendary vehicle, which was tested byAutocar in March 1961, has been honoured for "its beauty, power, driving pleasure and design".

The McLaren F1 has been named the second best car to be road-tested, followed by the Mini in the third spot.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS occupies the fourth place in the best road test table, while the Volkswagen Golf GTi comes in at fifth.

Autocar, which began road tests in 1928, said vehicles are rated for their performance, handling, ride comfort and price.

Autocar editor Chas Hallett said: "No car in history except the Jaguar E-type has been so successful in putting together such an amazing package so totally convincingly.

"It is a design that has transcended the decades and is as much in demand today as it was when Autocar first tested it almost half a century ago."

Jaguar's current design chief Ian Callum said: "The Jaguar E-type was a leader in design and handling in the 1960s and '70s and this accolade from Autocar shows that it is a car that maintains a sense of magic."
