Insurance companies have been urged to provide more information in renewal letters in order that consumers have enough knowledge to make an informed decision on their policy.
The call came from consumer champion Which? as it believes showing last year's premium alongside the renewal quote would encourage people to shop around for the best deal.
According to its research, almost two-thirds of people said they would be more likely to haggle for a discount on home orcar insurance with their current insurer if the renewal policy contained details abut the previous year's premium.
Which? also urged insurers to send out letters in a more timely fashion, suggesting that customers who received the letter at least three weeks before the renewal date would have more time to look for alternative cover.
It also said the letters should contain an explanation for any difference in the premium from year to year.
