A main road in Kent developed a large hole after an underground pipe burst, forcing the evacuation of nearby residents, it has been revealed.
Police said 15 families living around the damaged section of the A227 in Meopham were asked to move out of their homes as a precaution.
Officers, who were called in following the incident on Sunday morning, initiated the evacuation over fears that a gas main may have ruptured.
A Kent Police spokesman said: "Nearby residents were asked to leave their homes and are staying with family and friends whilst staff from utility companies are working to repair the damage."
