Helmet protester dies in bike fall

A US motorcyclist participating in an anti-helmet protest demonstration ride has died after falling off his bike and hitting his head on the pavement.

About 550 motorcyclists were taking part in a ride taken out in protest against the helmet laws in New York when Philip Contos, 55, of Parish, New York was thrown from his vehicle.

Police said the bike fishtailed and spun out of control when Mr Contos hit his brakes in the town of Onondaga near Syracuse, central New York.

Mr Contos, who was riding a 1983 Harley Davidson, was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on admission.

Mr Contos would have survived the fall had he been wearing a helmet, police said.
