Hamilton's F1 test drive success

Lewis Hamilton kept up his winning streak as he tested his new McLaren F1 car at Jerez and recorded the best time of the week.

The reigning world champion set the pace in testing taking over from Heikki Kovalainen and beating the other '09 spec cars at the Spanish circuit.

Hamilton saw off stiff competition from Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull who is expected to give McLaren and Ferrari a run for their money.

Hamilton's best lap time of one minute 20.737secs was only one thousandth of a second quicker than Vettel.

Hamilton, who completed 93 laps, said: "It doesn't take long to get used to the new buttons in the cockpit (KERS & front-wing flaps).

"But the real test for everyone now is to understand the slick tyres ahead of the first race in Melbourne next month."

Williams' Kazuki Nakajima finished 0.161secs down on Hamilton and Renault's Fernando Alonso was just over four tenths of a second further back and completed 133 laps of the circuit.
