A driver was seriously hurt on Tuesday when strong gales blew over a tree and it landed on his car.
He suffered a serious head wound and several other injuries and was treated in hospital after firefighters had to cut him free from his vehicle in Birmingham.
The high winds caused blockages on railway lines and bridges were forced to close as it was too dangerous for vehicles to drive over them.
Many, like the Humber Bridge, were closed to high-sided vehicles.
Higher ground in parts of England and Scotland saw heavy rain and even some snow.
The winds topped 70mph in some places early on Tuesday but died down to 55mph in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Cumbria.
Cold starts and showers were expected on Wednesday, Thursday and Good Friday, but conditions should improve for the Easter weekend and next week promises to be more settled.
