North Shields motorists are trying out a new pay and display parking scheme which offers free parking for one hour.
After discussions between the local council and the North Shields Chamber of Trade, the machine has been installed in Church Way.
Elected Mayor John Harrison said that the machine is the first of its type to be installed in the area and will help retailers in the borough. He added the move shows that the council is listening to the concerns expressed by retailers.
The parking facility provides all the benefits of a metered parking but enables free parking for an hour per vehicle per day.
When a driver wants to park for less than an hour, they input their vehicle registration number in the machine and press the button for a ticket. But if a driver intends to park for more than an hour, then they register their number plate and insert the appropriate amount to cover the extra time.
