Five-year ban for drink-driving Day

Failing to stop after an accident, driving while drunk and carrying an offensive weapon has left entertainer Darren Day with a five-year road ban and a £1,250 fine.

Day, 41, was stopped by police in Edinburgh at the end of December last year who found he had 58 microgrammes of alcohol in his breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

The screen and stage performer, who lives in Cudworth, South Yorkshire, was in Edinburgh to star in the Queen musical We Will Rock You.

Day admitted the driving offences and was sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court after being tried for another offence of carrying a martial arts weapon, for which he was convicted.

He said outside court: "I'm very relieved it's over. I am deeply sorry and ashamed of what's happened, especially for my family. I'm just very keen to move on now with my career and my life and leave it behind me."
