Fines cost government agency £43k

The transport minister has revealed that almost £43,000 has been racked up in parking and congestion charge fines over five years by the agency which provides ministerial cars and transports government documents.

Jim Fitzpatrick told MPs that in 2007/08 drivers for the Government Car and Despatch Agency incurred parking fines totalling £15,930 - more than two-and-a-half times the previous year's level.

Since 2003/04 the agency has paid a total of £42,480 in parking fines and £370 in congestion charge fines.

In response to a parliamentary question from senior Tory Grant Shapps (Welwyn Hatfield), Mr Fitzpatrick said the agency had also spent nearly £790,000 on the congestion charge for driving in central London.
