What Car? has honoured the "fantastic" Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec five-door, naming it used car of the year, as part of a series of awards to vehicles.
Editor-in-chief Chas Hallett described the Fiesta as stylish, safe, reliable and refined, as well as great to drive. Mr Hallett also said it was cheap to run.
A three-year-old example can be purchased for not much over £6,000. Mr Hallett said: "The Fiesta is a fantastic used car. It's a lot of talented car for the cash."
The economic downturn is likely to lead drivers to opt for more used cars as they budget for the vital areas of spending such ascar insurance .
OtherWhat Car? winners include Ford's Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, as the best used family car, with the best used MPV title going to the S-Max.
Meanwhile, the Nissan Qashqai, last year's overall winner, was awarded the honour of best used SUV.
And Volkswagen won two awards as the accolade of best used small family car went to the Golf 1.6 TDI and the best used estate title went to the Passat Estate 2.0 TDI.
There were two trophies for Audi, best used executive and luxury car for the A6 2.0 TDI and best fun car for the TT 2.0 TFSI. The 1.0 VVT-i three-door form of the Toyota Aygo was best used city car.
Running costs, reliability, driveability, quality, longevity, safety features and desirability were criteria examined by judges, who were drawn from all sections of the motor industry.
