An expert is offering a number of tips to motorists every week to prepare their vehicles for wintry conditions.
Simon Elstow, head of training at IAM Drive & Survive, advised drivers to maintain the condition of windscreen wipers of their cars to clear off wind and rain.
It is important to clean the inside of the windscreen regularly for good visibility.
He asked drivers to do a thorough check of their vehicles, especially tyres, lights, de-icer and ice scrapers. Drivers also need to top up washer fluid.
Although the legal minimum for tyre tread in the UK is 1.6mm, Mr Elstow said that it is better to replace them if the depth is below 3mm for better road grip.
A goodbreakdown cover might also be helpful for motorists who are driving during the winter.
An emergency kit, that includes a coat, high visibility jacket, food and water, a sturdy pair of boots, de-icer, scraper, torch, spade and mobile phone with a well-charged battery, should be kept ready in the car before starting a journey.
Mr Elstow said: "Now is the time to give your car a health-check before winter conditions take their toll. Bad weather can strike quickly, and more severely than you expect, so it's really important to be ready."
