Ford's new Mondeo and the Land Rover Discovery Sport were among the star performers in the latest round of Euro NCAP tests.
Both achieved the maximum five-star rating, as did the Lexus NX hybrid, the all-new Volkswagen Passat, the Subaru Outback and the Porsche Macan.
But the Vauxhall Corsa and Mini Cooper didn't perform as well in the safety tests - only managing four stars - along with the Smart ForTwo and its bigger sibling, the four-door, four-seat Smart ForFour.
At the other end of the scale, the Dacia Logan MCV achieved the lowest score, securing just three stars.
The Discovery Sport was awarded the highest mark for adult occupant protection and active safety assists, recording 93% and 82% respectively, blowing the rest of its competitors out of the water in the categories.
Elsewhere, the Macan, Passat and Outback shared the honours for best performance in child occupant protection with 87% each, while the Logan scored 75%, meaning it beat the Mini Cooper with 73%.
A rating of 71% meant the Corsa topped the pedestrian protection category, just ahead of the Outback with 70% and the NX and the Discovery Sport with 69% apiece.
