Drunk stole 999 car on crucial day

A man from east London who stole an emergency vehicle on New Year's Eve after drunkenly leaving a party has been jailed for nine months.

Drink driver Daniel Glover appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court where Judge Anthony Goldstaub told him he took the vehicle "on a night of the year when the need for it to preserve life and help the ill and injured was at its greatest".

The 26 year-old from Mile End led police on a dangerous chase which reached speeds of 120mph through Clacton in Essex, Prosecutor Michael Fraser said.

Glover said he did not realise it was an ambulance response vehicle, despite it being marked up and him driving with the blue lights on. His ride only came to an end when police used a stinger to stop the vehicle by puncturing the wheels.

The judge also disqualified Glover from driving for 18 months.
