British motorists must gain a greater understanding of how and when their car needs servicing, an industry body has said.
Research by the Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme found more than half (52%) of the 1,338 private car owners questioned did not know when their next service was due.
About 9% also admitted they did not carry out any basic maintenance and safety checks in between services, such as monitoring tyre pressures and oil levels.
The Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA), regulated by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), is the UK's first independently run voluntary scheme that provides proof that a car technician has skills and abilities to a national standard.
Sarah Sillars, chief executive of the IMI, said: "Motorists really need to get more service savvy now that cars have become so complex. This means making sure your car is well looked after at the right time."
When asked about various acronyms, nearly a third of all respondents (30%) said they had no idea what the likes of EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and TCS (Traction Control System) actually mean.
The IMI has now launched the You know you're OK with ATA campaign to help motorists seek out garages that employ ATA registered technicians.
