Drivers face delays after M8 crash

An accident on the M8 motorway has led to the closure of a stretch of road near Harthill, North Lanarkshire, in both directions, causing delays to motorists.

Diversions have been put in place after part of the motorway, which connects Glasgow and Edinburgh, was closed following the accident, which occurred just after 6am on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "The road is closed and will be for some time."

A statement on theTraffic Scotland website said: "The M8 is currently closed in both directions between junction six (Newhouse) and junction four (Whitburn) due to a serious road traffic incident. Police advise road users to avoid the area if possible.

"Westbound traffic is being diverted off the M8 at J4 on to A801 - A706 - B7066 and rejoin M8 westbound at J5 (Shotts) diversion for eastbound traffic diverted off at J6 Newhouse-A73- B7066-A706- M8 J4 Whitburn."
