Snow and freezing temperatures may hit motorists with further wintry conditions predicted for this week.
Forecasters say the mercury is expected to drop below zero in many areas and rain will turn to snow as the week progresses.
With the colder weather setting in, road maintenance agencies have put gritters on stand-by.
Gemma Plumb, a forecaster with MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said Tuesday night is likely to be one of the coldest.
She said: "We might see some snow on Thursday, but it's too early to say for definite when it will occur and how much there will be.
"It's looking cold over the next few days."
The weather conditions, however, were "fairly typical for this time of year".
On Sunday evening Scotland experienced lows of -5C, while the North West witnessed -4C and East Anglia and the South East saw the mercury fall to -2C.
