Driver survives Grand Canyon plunge

A man has escaped with only a few minor injuries after the car that he was driving fell 200ft (61m) down into the Grand Canyon in the US, authorities in Arizona have said.

Park rangers said the 21-year-old told them how after having driven off the South Rim on Monday evening, he managed to free himself from the wreckage and climb to the top to seek help.

The man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Flagstaff Medical Centre, officials have said.

His car was found lodged against a tree, nearly 200ft (61m) below the rim.

The incident is being investigated by National Park Service officials.

The identity of the man has not yet been revealed.
