Couple planning Mini charity trek

A couple are all set to undertake a 35-day journey across 10 countries in a bid to raise funds for charity.

Nicky West and Rob Stacey will set off from Hatfield House in Hertfordshire for the Great Pyramid of Giza on May 22, and will return to the starting point on June 26, with the aim of raising £11,000 for the Willow Foundation charity.

The trip, which they are embarking on in a cherry red 1961 Mini, will take them over three continents so they best ensure they have goodbreakdown cover in place.

TheWillow Foundation helps seriously ill young people take a break from medical treatment to spend time with their loved ones or to live their dreams.

The Mini was purchased on eBay and hadn't been driven since 1967 although the only problems seemed to be a leaking engine hose and crossed sparkplug wires. The car has now been carefully repaired for the epic journey, but remains an original Mini.

Nicky admitted: "It is going to be a really hard slog. The Mini has no air conditioning and we'll spend over 10 hours in the car each day with temperatures around 40ºC, so we should certainly come back a bit thinner."
