The dangers of winter driving - slippery roads and longer breaking distances - should be well known to motorists.
Yet surprisingly, it appears very few take heed to ensure they have the correct tyres fitted when temperatures begin to drop during the winter.
An accident at any time of the year could have an impact on a motorist'scar insurance. Yet research from What Car? shows that UK drivers are overlooking the benefits of swapping to winter rubber when it gets colder.
Its research shows that just 10% of drivers switched from summer to winter tyres last year, while 85% made no attempt to swap.
At the same time, 5% of motorists were unable to swap their tyre sets because supplies ran out.
What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett said: "Winter tyres make for much safer winter driving, so we would encourage all motorists to change their tyres in the colder months. Used in this way, a set of winter tyres will last motorists several years."
