Cliff plunge death investigated

The death of a man and woman whose car went over a 328ft cliff on the Isle of Wight is being investigated by police.

The bodies of the two deceased were recovered from the bottom of Culver Down cliffs from an upturned blue vehicle, Hampshire Police said.

Solent Coastguard described the car as "very crushed".

After receiving a call at 8pm emergency services had to fight against the rising tide to remove the pair from the vehicle.

Coastguards from Bembridge, Ryde and Ventnor attended the scene alongside Solent's coastguard helicopter, a spokeswoman said.

Witness Anne Ricketts saw firefighters travelling to the scene while she was walking her dog along the beach.

The 47-year-old from Sandown said she saw a tractor transporting the firefighters before a coastguard helicopter dropped someone into the water just before 8pm.

She added that she also saw "truckloads" of other rescuers being dropped off.
