Car thieves make off with boy, five

A pair of thieves in Hampshire got more than they bargained for when they stole a performance car - with the owner's five-year-old son still in the back seat.

The 24-year-old woman, who does not want to be named, had got out of her Mitsubishi Lancer Evo after a BMW crashed into the back of her vehicle on Stakes Hill Road, Waterlooville, on Thursday evening.

While she argued with the male driver of the BMW, another man got out of the car and drove off the Mitsubishi with the young boy still sitting in the back seat. The boy was found to be unhurt in the abandoned vehicle outside a nearby school a few minutes later.

The child's mother told Hampshire Police: "As I imagine anyone would do, I got out of the car to speak to the other driver, it never crossed my mind that while I was doing this my car would be driven away."

Detective Inspector Christopher Parry said: "Our investigation is focused on the motive of stealing a valuable performance car, not abducting a child."
