Car thieves hijack sleeping baby

Shocked parents have been reunited with their two-year-old child after thieves stole their car with the toddler asleep inside.

They had been unloading shopping from their black Vauxhall Vectra at the family home in Skelmersdale, Lancs. The car was found abandoned 25 minutes later in the town`s Tawd Road with the child safe and sound.

The child's father saw the car being driven away at speed shortly after 3.45pm on Sunday, and immediately called the police.

In a similar incident 24 hours earlier, car-jackers in Preston stole a Nissan Micra with a 19-month-old baby inside. Both were found unharmed some minutes later.

Det Sgt Michele Skinley from Lancashire Police said: "This was a very distressing situation for the family and I would appeal for anybody who witnessed this incident to contact police.

"Indeed, I would also like to speak with anyone who may have seen a black Vauxhall Vectra being driven in the area any time after 3.45pm."
