Car plummets 100ft down cliff

Four women will be claiming on their car insurance after the vehicle they were travelling in tumbled 100ft down a cliff.

The friends emerged from the accident virtually unscathed after their Nissan Note went crashing into a rock pool in North Tyneside.

They suffered only minor injuries after the hatchback failed to negotiate a bend and crashed through fencing at the seafront, ending up in a former outdoor swimming pool.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said of the car: "It came to a halt in a tidal salt water pool known as the Sealife Rock Pool. Fortunately, the tide was out."

Officers have launched an inquiry into the crash.

The 33-year-old driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, a force spokeswoman said.
