Cycle campaigners have urged the Government to lift "daft" regulations requiring ministerial approval before safety mirrors for cyclists can be installed at dangerous road junctions.
Figures show that the number of cycle deaths in London has risen from 10 last year to 16 in 2011.
According to Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group and chairman of the Transport Committee, it is important to take strong action to make roads a safe place for bicycle riders, especially after observing the considerable increase in injuries across Britain as a whole.
Ms Pidgeon said: "In London we desperately need to take action at the most dangerous junctions.
"Another much needed change would be ending the bureaucratic Whitehall restrictions on the introduction of safety mirrors at junctions."
She further added: "These mirrors help remove blind spots at dangerous junctions and are welcomed by both lorry drivers and cyclists. We need to quickly roll them out at hundreds of junctions."
