BMW has produced its one-millionth X5 SUV model after only 11 years of production.
A sapphire black metallic X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim brought up the magic number after it rolled off the production line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It has been purchased by a customer in China.
X5 vehicles manufactured in the Spartanburg plant, which has been in existence for since 1995, are now exported to more than 120 countries across the globe.
The model has won a number of awards since production started in 1999 - it picked up the "autonis" design prize from the trade journal "auto motor und sport" in 2007 and was also given a Gold Award in the JD Power Study on customer satisfaction in North America.
Its safety features have also been praised, with the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety naming it as "Top Safety Pick" for outstanding crash behaviour in 2007 and 2008. Europe's largest automobile club, ADAC, placed it second behind the BMW X3 in the all-terrain category in the latest breakdown statistics.
