Bluebird to attempt speed record

The grandson of famous racing motorist Sir Malcolm Campbell is aiming to drive to a new world land speed record of over 500mph in an electric-powered version of the Bluebird car.

Bluebird Electric is scheduled to run through a series of speed trials at the famous Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire on July 2 and 3 this year. The existing UK record for electric cars is 137 mph.

Don Wales is the nephew of speed record breaker Donald Campbell. Since the 1920s, the Campbell family has established a world famous record breaking tradition.

Wales is planning to set the speed record for electric cars at more than 500mph in 2013 and so he is conducting tests using various battery technologies on Bluebird to boost the vehicle's speed.

Delta Motorsport will manufacture a new Bluebird model to help Wales attempt to set the record. The Silverstone-based firm produces the 150mph battery-powered Delta E-4 Coupé road car.
