Blizzards and snowdrifts in the West Country trapped at least 200 people in their cars as much of the UK is gripped by transport chaos.
Drivers in Devon were caught out after 1ft of snow fell as forecasters warned of a fifth consecutive day of major disruption in the South.
Most of the estimated 200 vehicles were stuck on the A38 and A380 south of Exeter and the A386 near Tavistock.
Police and Army teams used four-wheel-drive vehicles to reach trapped passengers. Others managed to walk to safety in freezing conditions and drifting snow to shelters near Exeter and in Okehampton.
Meanwhile, more snow was also falling in London, Hampshire, Berkshire and southern Oxfordshire, with dangerous driving conditions reported on the M5 and M4 in Wiltshire, Berkshire and Bristol.
