Biker banned for speeding at 116mph

A seasoned traffic officer has criticised the actions of a man who was caught riding his motorbike at 116mph during rush-hour traffic near York.

North Yorkshire Police officer Dave Brown condemned the behaviour of Matthew Greenwood, 34, who was caught going almost double the speed limit on the 60mph A1237 on the morning of October 31, especially as the road was wet at the time.

Greenwood, of Rainsborough Way, York, lost his licence for three months, was fined £395 and ordered to pay costs of £60 after pleading guilty to speeding at Selby Magistrates' Court. Having his licence revoked, albeit temporarily, could make it increasingly difficult for Greenwood to secure reasonably pricedcar insurance in the future.

Inspector Brown said: "This is one of the worst cases of inappropriate and excessive speed I have seen in 30 years of policing.

"Greenwood rode his bike at almost double the legal speed limit, in heavy, rush-hour traffic, and showed complete disregard for the safety of other road users."
