Bentley Mulsanne due next spring

British manufacturer Bentley has announced that it will begin producing its new £220,000 luxury car next spring.

The first customers will get the chance to drive away in the Mulsanne next summer, after it has been manufactured at the firm's headquarters in Crewe, Cheshire.

Boasting a 6.75-litre V8 engine that is lighter and more fuel and CO2-efficient, the car offers potential drivers a choice of 114 paint colours, 21 carpet colours, nine wood veneers and 24 interior leather hides.

A unique body production facility is currently being completed. It is thought the car is likely to attract American motorists in particular.

The Mulsanne, which takes nine weeks to be built, has already been displayed at motor shows in Pebble Beach, California and Frankfurt.

Stuart McCullough, of Bentley's sales and marketing team, said: "Even at this very early stage, the expression of interest we've received easily exceeds our 2010 production targets.

"We've been encouraged by the positive commentary, notably from our American customers as the Mulsanne was privately previewed in seven metro markets across the country."
