Baby girl born in the back of a car

A baby girl born in the back of a Vauxhall Zafira MPV has been named after the policewoman who helped deliver her.

Catherine Louise, the middle names of Pc Jess Lane, is the latest addition to the family of Lynsey Haynes and partner David Miller.

Mr Miller described how he saw the police car with Pc Lane and colleagues "and I ran and tapped the window and shouted 'my girlfriend's having a baby' and they all jumped out.

"I can't thank the police and the emergency services enough. It was such an amazing situation and I can't believe what happened. Who knows what would have happened if they hadn't been there."

Ms Haynes, who has two other daughters, 18-month-old Niamh and four-year-old Megan, told the Yorkshire Evening Post how she had set out for hospital after her labour pains started, but the baby began to arrive during the journey.

A paramedic on a bicycle later arrived to cut the umbilical cord, and an ambulance rushed the 6lb 14oz newborn to hospital. Because Ms Haynes couldn`t leave the car, she was driven to hospital with a police escort by Pc Lane's colleague Sergeant Michael Branfoot.
