Alfa Romeo's stylish new Giulietta has been named the safest family car of 2010 by Euro NCAP.
The safety testing body said the hatchback had the best scores across all criteria for assessment and was given the prestigious five star rating.
Euro NCAP crash tested a range of models last year in five separate categories and has now announced the winners in each.
BMW's latest 5 Series was the best performer among executive cars and its five-star rating is a distinct improvement on the four stars which its predecessor secured.
Honda's CR-Z was named the safest supermini and Toyota's Verso the best small MPV, while Kia's Sportage emerged victorious in the small 4x4 category.
Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said: "The presence in these categories of high performing five star cars demonstrates car manufacturers' commitment to safety for all sizes of vehicles."
