Drivers who regard 13 as an unlucky number may be given the chance to avoid having it on their number plates next year, it has emerged.
Motorists who buy a new car registered from March 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013 could opt to have it registered as a 62-plate under the DVLA's plans, effectively keeping it the same as vehicles registered from September 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013.
However, the VRA has warned this could pose a "challenge" to the used-car market because people who don't pick up on the one-off change might undervalue a car on the basis that it has the apparently older number plate.
Under the DVLA's proposal number plates would then revert back to the usual pattern - so in other words 63 registration plates will be introduced from September 1, 2013.
The quirk is "something for the used market to consider in spring next year", the VRA added.
