Buying a used car privately can be a risky business, with as many as 45% of motorists believing they were deceived in some way by the person who sold it to them. Yet despite this, some 2.7 million cars are bought and sold privately in the UK each year, with motorists opting to take a chance on lower prices, rather than the greater security of a trade sale.

So that’s it. The Christmas decorations have returned to their box in the loft, the tree - minus many of its needles - has been confined to the recycling centre and that festive jumper, which looked so good a couple of weeks ago, suddenly looks a bit past it.

As cars have become more and more computerised working out why they have broken down has become increasingly complex. This is why the RAC made a £6m investment to equip its 1,500 roadside technicians with the very latest mobile technology in the form of rugged laptops to fix more of its members’ vehicles at the roadside as quickly as possible.

More and more of the UK’s motorway network is being turned into managed motorway sections. This is where the hard shoulder has been scrapped in favour of reducing traffic congestion. With it comes a safety implication for motorway breakdowns.

The Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is the world’s oldest motoring event. Organised by the Royal Automobile Club, the 2014 Run takes place on Sunday 2 November and will attract as many as 450 pre 1905 automobiles from the dawn of motoring as well as hundreds of thousands of spectators en route.
