Motorists urged to 'prepare and take care' during extreme weather conditions

With forecasts for heavy rain and strong winds across the UK heading into Christmas Eve, the RAC is urging drivers to take every precaution on the roads to reduce the likelihood of requiring breakdown assistance. 

The combination of these two types of weather causes particular hazards for motorists, including driving through deep standing water, debris on the road and problems controlling a vehicle in exposed areas.

These conditions will be potentially even more problematic as the roads are set to be busy with people heading home for Christmas.

We are anticipating a traffic volume increase of 10%-15%, especially on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, so preparation is key.

Before setting off ensure you:

• Plan your journey in advance taking care to avoid areas which are prone to flooding, or are very exposed
• Factoring in extra time to allow for slower speeds and potential congestion
• Let relatives and friends know your intended route and expected time of arrival and where possible, travel with others
• Check that your windscreen wiper blades are fully functional. If both front and back blades are not up to scratch, get them replaced
• Make sure you fill up. Using your lights and heaters and being caught in traffic use more fuel than driving in normal conditions
• Carry a mobile phone in case you encounter any difficulties during your journey and ensure you have the number of our breakdown cover emergency assist team
