The UK is certainly home to some of the most romantic cities in Europe. What could be more romantic this Valentine’s Day than exploring the rest of Europe in search of a new lover’s paradise?
Your options are almost limitless: selfie-taking at the top of the Eiffel Tower, twilight strolls over iconic Italian bridges, or sightseeing in Barcelona. But anyone could opt for a cliché. Why not go the extra mile (or several!) and plan a trip to a more mysterious or less typical destination? RAC European Breakdown Cover has unearthed a few great spots to get you thinking.
You might know Dublin for its lively atmosphere and the famous Irish hospitality. What you might not know is that it’s also home to the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church, which houses The Shrine to St. Valentine, complete with Pope certified remains of the martyr. On Valentine’s Day each year, there is a special mass but, not surprisingly, it’s the busiest day of the year to visit the church.
If your loved one’s a chick flick fan, wow them with a visit to Whelan’s pub on Wexford Street, where Gerard Butler’s character serenaded Hilary Swank’s in P.S. I Love You, or re-enact the moment the two met in the beautiful village of Lacken, just a 45-minute drive from Dublin.

Arrive a few days before Valentine’s and immerse yourself in the town of Camogli’s festival of love. There's an annual art competition to find the official image of the "Lovers in Camogli" festival, as well as a love-poem writing contest – 20 of the best are turned into posters and displayed on the waterfront. Maybe submit one of your own from home before you go. What a surprise that would be if you won!

San Sebastian, Spain
If you love your food as much as you love your sweetheart, San Sebastián, or Donostia (as the locals call it) is the place for you, with more Michelin stars per capita than any other city. These restaurants are pricy but this could be the perfect place, and time, to indulge in a once in a lifetime experience. There are also plenty of affordable, specialist pintxos (simple tapas) bars in the region. And, if eating it isn’t enough, you can contact Pintxo Sanse who offer personalised three-hour courses (in Spanish, English and French) in creating your own culinary masterpieces.
